Industrial Respirator Selection Guide

Respiratory protection must be selected for the specific workplace hazard and used within an appropriate respiratory protection program. A respirator or cartridge should never be chosen solely from a generic product description.

Identify the hazard first

Determine the contaminant, concentration and work environment before selecting respiratory PPE. Employers should follow applicable OSHA requirements and the respirator manufacturer's instructions.

Half-face versus full-face respirators

Reusable half-face and full-face respirators serve different needs. Full-face models can add eye and face coverage, while the appropriate choice depends on the hazard assessment and required protection.

Filters and cartridges must match the hazard

Filters and cartridges are not interchangeable solutions for every contaminant. Use only components approved for the specific respirator system and application.

Fit matters

Tight-fitting respirators depend on an effective face seal and require proper fit testing and use practices.
